Displaying Land Cover and Land Use Areas

When designing for map displays, engineers need to determine a practical order of how features overlay so that relevant features are not hidden by other Land Cover or Land Use areas. TomTom^® recommends the following guidelines:

Land Use features can always overlap with any other feature (including Land Cover features).
Land Cover features never overlap with other Land Cover or Water areas.
It is best to draw Water on top of any other feature.

If there are islands or other Land Cover features inside Water, then there is a gap in the water at those locations and there should be no overlap. The following table lists a recommended order for displaying Land Cover and Land Use features.
